Another great story. I especially loved, "On the challenges and joys of scavenger pet ownership" letter at the end of the audio book. ( )

This is the weakest book of the series, at least so far. Winter just wasn't likable or interesting for me. He is the IceWing equivalent of Draco Malfoy - the Draco Malfoy you see in fanfiction. Brooding, conflicted, dramatic, tortured, and all the other adjectives that were so romantic and mysterious when I was a little kid/young adult, that just annoy and exasperate me as an adult. He suffers by having all the other characters around him being better.

The world-building here is nice, both with the expansion of IceWing culture but also the historical elements with Darkstalker and Foeslayer. There's some clever surprises.

The Pyrite Mask is horrific and well-executed. I like how well Sutherland shows the trial and error in making the mask, and how much of a mindfuck it is to wear. She really sells the traumatic elements of it and gives it weight, and I appreciate that realism. Everything has consequences.

This wasn't my favorite, but I am stoked for the next book as Peril is a much better tragic figure in the series. ( )

this is a really good book. i really enjoy reading it, i recommend this book because it makes the dragons so realistic. it can relate to world life situations, i wouldn't recommend if you don't like to read drama/sad stories. the way the story is set is very dramatic, it really can hook the reader to the book, making the reader want to definitely see what would happen in the next chapter. i found this book really interesting, because this seems like a real life situation, dealing with family problems, your parents being too hard on your actions, and on your back every step of the way. this dragon family is going through that-exact situation!!for all those looking for an interesting, relative story. read this book!we get to know what ea h dragon is like, and who going through what. winter is a disappointment to his family and he will continue to be if he doesn't prove to them that he is better and stronger than he seems.as the story goes on humans start to appear. i really like reading this book, i might even decide to get the other books that go with the series. overall i really liked this book, it was very interesting. i like how they try to create a peaceful dragon nation by working together. i am planning on finishing reading the series. i recommend this book for everyone looking for an inspirational stry, then this is your book. This book begins with Winter, an IceWing, leaving Jade Mountain Academy to find his who had just left and maybe even his brother who had been hinted to be alive in a dream but had been captured by the SkyWings. He brings a cage with his pet scavenger, Bandit, in it, to release in the rain. As he flies down to the ground though, the rest of his winglet catches up to him. Moonwatcher, a NightWing, tries to change his mind, but to no avail. Winter then tries to convince the others to stay behind, but none of them want to. However, Turtle the SeaWing decides he should stay just to make sure all the other dragons at Jade Mountain know what is happening to the rest of the winglet. Suddenly, Moon brings a prophecy to the winglet that leaves everyone uneasy about the impending doom it hints. She also shares the fact that she can read minds as well as see the future. Winter is not satisfied with this, but he knows it’s best to start flying now and hope for the others to keep up. He flies to the rainforest first, where his sister is sure to be hunting Queen Glory. While in the rainforest, guards spot the winglet, and the guards led the group through the jungle and to Queen Glory. The plan was to warn her about how Winter’s sister Icicle could come and try to kill her soon. However, before meeting the queen, a NightWing attacks Winter and stops him from moving. Luckily, Queen Glory comes to Winter’s rescue, and the winglet tells her all they know. Next, the queen, Winter, Moon, and Qibli from the winglet explore the rainforest to try and find Icicle. They find the remains of a fight between Icicle and a NightWing with the evidence of her frostbreath, and know she must be near. For safety, Queen Glory puts the winglet into the dragonet wingery, where they would be heavily guarded. Winter decided it would be best to wait to escape the hatchery and look for Icicle, so that’s what he did. As the winglet searched for Icicle, Winter told Moon about stories why the NightWings and IceWings were rivals. Then they finally saw Icicle, who was sleep deprived and wretched. She was put into the healer’s pavillion first, then put in jail. The winglet then leaves to search for Hailstorm, Winter’s brother who is rumored to be alive, and are startled by a meeting with some dragons, who help the winglet with directions. A strange SkyWing with an interesting necklace accompanies them on the search, and find what was left of Ex-Queen Scarlet of the SkyWings’ camp. After a crazy dream, Winter realizes he is no longer safe, so he quickly flies to where he made camp and tries to remove the necklace from the SkyWing. She grapples with him and Qibli, but suddenly, a brutally strong dragon attacks Kinkajou, one of Winter’s clawmates. The dragon starts attacking the others`until Winter makes them leave with a burst of frostbreath. Kinkajou is quickly brought to the nearest town for healing and the SkyWing’s necklace is taken off. The strange necklace had actually been enchanted to mask the actual dragon with the identity of a SkyWing, and it hid Winter’s brother, Hailstorm. The reunion wasn’t perfect, but Winter was glad Hailstorm was found, and the two left for the IceWing Kingdom.

This book was a great read, with plenty of exciting moments that left me at the edge of my seat. I enjoyed reading about the details of the rainforest and how Winter viewed the RainWings. When Icicle was found, I could picture her state in my mind. The details of Possibility also helped me picture the city in my mind. When Winter let Bandit go, that warmed my heart with his compassion. I laughed at Qibli’s jokes and I loved how Qibli always tried to cheer Winter up. The details in this book were vivid and colorful, and I liked reading through exciting discoveries such as when scavengers attacked the winglet. This book was an enjoyable read, and I would love to reread it. ( )

"Ok," Winter said, puzzling over the note. "I think it says: Enchant this paper so that when any dragon wears it in the form of a necklace, he or she shall fully become a female SkyWing named Pyrite, with the following conditions:
(1) Completely loyal to Queen Scarlet and the SkyWing tribe
(2) Insecure and weak
(3) No memory of his or her former identity
(4) Compelled to wear this necklace at all times with life-or-death urgency.
"
Winter had no idea. It didn't make sense to him either. He opened his talons and looked down at the crumpled pouch and chain that Hailstorm had been wearing.
At the sight of them, Hailstorm shuddered violently. "I'm supposed to wear that!" He cried. "It can't ever come off! I'll die if it does!" He stopped, felt his throat for a moment, and covered his eyes with a groan. "All right. I hear myself."
"What's in there?" Qibli asked, leaning closer to study the necklace.
"Oh, that's right," Qibli said. "Didn't you say you're related to someone important?"
"Very funny," Winter said.
"Yes," Hailstorm interjected at the same time, a little too loudly."We're Queen Glacier's nephews. EVERYONE knows that." He lifted his chin and regarded a pair of passing SandWings with enormous disdain.
