Fiction. Romance. LGBTQIA+ (Fiction.) HTML:

After breaking his arm on set, Wolf's Landing stuntman Ginsberg Sloan finds himself temporarily out of work. Luckily, Bluewater Bay's worst B&B has cheap long-term rates, and Ginsberg's not too proud to take advantage of them.

Derrick Richards, a grizzled laid-off logger, inherited the B&B after his parents' untimely deaths. Making beds and cooking sunny-side-up eggs is hardly Derrick's idea of a man's way to make a living, but just as he's decided to shut the place down, Ginsberg shows up on his doorstep, pitiful and soaking wet, and Derrick can hardly send him packing.

Not outright, at least.

The plan? Carry on the B&B's tradition of terrible customer service and even worse food until the pampered city boy leaves voluntarily. What Derrick doesn't count on, though, is that the lousier he gets at hosting, the more he convinces bored, busybody Ginsberg to try to get the B&B back on track. And he definitely doesn't count on the growing attraction between them, or how much more he learns from Ginsberg than how to put out kitchen fires.

Totally enjoyed this book. Well developed characters and plenty of romance! ( )

I loved the shit out of this story.

For a whole bunch of reasons which I'm not saying because then I would have to concentrate on writing in English and I'm a bit too tired for that.

Still it had to be said. I'm constantly blown away by these two writers. ( )

I wanted to give this 5 stars I really did. I love a gruff mountain man who can't express himself and is insecure in his own skin. And I loved Ginsberg who was FTM and seemed so much more together than Derrick. But see I said seemed there, not was. Because Ginsberg had issues too and yet they weren't addressed because when the fallout comes (and you know it's going to, this is not a spoiler) we the reader are obviously expected to take Ginsburg's side. But I couldn't. Ginsberg held on to his self-righteousness for far too long in my opinion. He put all his stock in Derrick's words, and regardless of how hurtful they were, and gave no thought to Derrick's actions, to the way he had treated Ginsberg up to that point. He assigned labels to Derrick that didn't fit Derrick's behaviour at all and never once after they got back together did he 1) apologise for these incorrect accusations, or 2) attempt to find out why Derrick purposely set out to destroy the relationship. Yes Derrick had issues but he was also trying to guard his heart (in a way guaranteed to break it, I'll grant you). So yes I thought the aftermath of the breakup went on too long for no good reason other than because Ginsberg could. And the new 'enlightened' Derrick, acting like a lovesick puppy wasn't the same man at all, all his gruff gumption had been taken away and replaced with a strange pining person with no strong opinion on anything and completely uncertain about everything. I would have like some time with them after they get back together to ensure they got back their dynamic from before the breakup. All in all it was 5 stars up to the breakup, which was really just extreme miscommunication, then 3 stars from then (apart from Derrick at the lumberyard and his plan to get Ginsberg back). Also I was really disappointed in Jim, who had been friends long enough to know how Derrick behaved but made no attempt to find out why he'd sabotaged the best relationship he'd had, instead taking Ginsberg's side without question.

FYI, 'kid' annoyed me for a long time especially once we knew there was only 4 years between them and Derrick still used it. ( )
