At first glance, this looks like a friends to lovers story, but personally, I think Piper and Sage have been lovers all along, they just didn’t acknowledge their deeper feelings and there was no physical dimension to their love. The game of "Truth or Dare" Sage instigates one evening is designed to change that. I have to admit, the whole situation and especially Piper's desperation pulled me in from the start. What could be worse than losing the ability to fulfill your dream?

Piper has had a hard time after his accident, thinking he has hidden the devastating long-term consequences from everyone. He is all wrapped up in himself, and can’t even see that his best friend, Sage, is hurting as well. He also can’t see that Sage is uniquely suited to helping him figure out what's next. As they play the game, emotions soon run high, Piper reacts badly, and when he realizes what he's done to Sage, he finally manages to look beyond his own situation.

Sage clearly knows the score. "Truth or Dare" is a great way of discovering all kinds of things about the people you play it with, and, under the guise of having fun to help Piper relax and get over his depression, Sage manages to steer the discussion in the direction he wants. Well, it is a little more difficult than that, but overall his plan works.

Even though these guys know each other extremely well, there is much they haven't shared. It was fascinating to see how they slowly opened up and got to the truth of their feelings for each other. If you like stories with extremely emotional situations and characters who have a lot to learn, if you enjoy a level of sweetness that is probably unrealistic but can be a wonderful escape from real life, and if you're looking for a read that will pull at your heartstrings and leave you with a big smile at the end, then you should give this short story a try.
