I came to like Maggie Hope and her struggle to find her place as an American woman in Britain during the war. Well she was born in Britain, but she grew up in America so her roots may be British, but in Britain she is American. And now she is back home and she is thrilled to be back even though it's a devastating action that has brought them to America. The attack on Pearl Harbor has just occurred and now it seems that America will finally also join the war. Also, a young black man is accused of killing a white man and is sentenced to death and Eleanor Roosevelt is trying to persuade her husband to interfere with it, to persuade the governor to stop it. I found this part of the story both sad and horrifying as always when a man is not tried fairly by a jury. But this is the 40s America. Reading this book made me think of something I read or heard somewhere that on the day that Pearl Harbor was attacked Winston Churchill wrote in his diary “we have won”! Because now he knew that America would join the war. Anyway, I was thrilled to be approved for this book since I a) like this series and I'm planning on reading the two between this one and the first and b) I like FDR very much. Susan Elia MacNeal has done a tremendous good work in writing a novel about the meeting between Roosevelt and Churchill. Also, I came to like Eleanor Roosevelt quite much in this book. There was a moment in the book, a very intense moment when I really was drawn into the story and I wasn't quite sure, but hopeful that it would end well and that was when Maggie traveled to the prison to the execution. This really made me think of “The Green Mile”. The electric chair is truly an awful invention. How it all ended? Well, you have to read it yourself! (  ) MaraBlaise | Jul 23, 2022 | ) Malaraa | Apr 26, 2022 | I really enjoyed the latest installment of the Maggie Hope series and this is my favorite so far, perhaps because I'm biased and work in DC but it was nice to read of a story set in my city during my favorite season of Christmas. I am a long time lover in historical fiction and am starting to read more mysteries as well. One complaint of some books would be that yes, the author is centering the plot on a war but does not address other equally not so pretty societal issues. I very thankfully did not have that issue with Mrs. Roosevelt's Confidante. You read of Maggie's adventures in the White House but she also explores horrible racial issues of the US at the time. It felt more accurate and real than other historical fiction books I've read. I read of some situations Maggie herself was addressing her personal and inaccurate associations with race as well. So while I will always look forward to the next Maggie Hope book and will look up to her, the reader is also let in to her weaknesses. The setting is Decemer 1941 soon after the attack on Unisted States Pearl Harbour. Using a fictious character named Maggie Hope, who is an ace investigator/private detectice who travels to the White House with Churchill's assistants who are helping negotiane the United States entry into World War II.
Previously an isolationist, when Pearl Harbor is bombed, killing so many unspecting innocents, it is obvious that the United States can no longer stick it's head in the sand and must rally round Churchill. Both eloquent speakers and hard-working, intelligent leaders, when the two come together, a strong bond results. It is obvious the author did a lot of research, and notes that she watched the Ken Burns series of United States history as a springboard.
When Maggie Hope learns that there is a plot to defame Eleanor Roosevelt after her secretary is murdered, she chooses to bring this to light with Mrs. Roosevelt. While the sitaution did not occur, the author uses this character so allow the reader access to the life and intelligence of Eleanor is portrayed lovingly and quite accurately.
The portrayal of Winston Churchill was fascinating and the details of Hitler's sweep through the European countries, leaving death and destruction in his path, confirms that those previously reluctant to enter the war, are now convinced of the enevitability of necessity.
The backdrop of Christmas at the White House and Churchill and Roosevelt stratigized hoe to defeat Hitler was a delighted addition.
I liked this book so much that I purchased most of the series.
