On October 17, 1960, the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad was created in the merger of the Erie and the Delaware Lackawanna and Western. During its short lifetime -- it only lasted until April 1, 1976 -- it changed its official name, subtly, two times: eliminating the hyphen, and then changing "Railroad" to "Railway" when Norfolk and Western subsidiary Dereco reluctantly took it over.
