Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Discover the "captivating, absorbing, and beautifully told" (Kathleen Grissom) love story of Sisi, the Austro-Hungarian empress and wife of Emperor Franz Josephâ??perfect for fans of the Netflix series The Empress!
The year is 1853, and the Habsburgs are Europe's most powerful ruling family. With his empire stretching from Austria to Russia, from Germany to Italy, Emperor Franz Joseph is young, rich, and ready to marry.

Fifteen-year-old Elisabeth, "Sisi," Duchess of Bavaria, travels to the Habsburg Court with her older sister, who is betrothed to the young emperor. But shortly after her arrival at court, Sisi finds herself in an unexpected dilemma: she has inadvertently fallen for and won the heart of her sister's groom. Franz Joseph reneges on his earlier proposal and declares his intention to marry Sisi instead.

Thrust onto the throne of Europe's most treacherous imperial court, Sisi upsets political and familial loyalties in her quest to win, and keep, the love of her emperor, her people, and of the world.

With Pataki's rich period detail and cast of complex, bewitching characters, The Accidental Empress offers "another absolutely compelling story" (Mary Higgins Clark) with this glimpse into one of history's most intriguing royal families, shedding new light on the glittering Hapsburg Empire and its most mesmerizing, most beloved "Fairy Queen

I found this overall disappointing. Parts of it were very interesting, parts of it were not. There's a lot of people doing things without us readers really getting a feel for WHY people are doing or saying things.

My main issue is actually how the book was written and I can't believe I haven't seen other people bugged by it. There are a ton of sentences that start with "Well,", sometimes there'll be like 5 in a row?? You know how sometimes you'll read something and two consecutive paragraphs will use the same big vocabulary word? That happens a very noticeable amount of times in this book. Some of the dialogue is also really cringe-inducing. Sisi's like "Franz's heir? Gasp, a baby!" Like I would expect that level of dialogue in something aimed at 10 year olds. ( )

I like historical fiction and I live in Vienna, so I was drawn to this book. It didn’t disappoint - it was a fun read. ( )

The Accidental Empress is a well researched and good story about Franz Joseph's wife, Elizabeth or Sisi, as she was nicknamed. She was a woman who was a dreamer and lover of life. Sisi had a horrible mother-in-law, Sophie, who believed herself to be the empress, not Sisi. The book comes to a conclusion but does not complete the story of Sisi. Therefore, there must be a second book about Sisi. Four stars were given in this review. ( )

Wonderfully written fictional biography of Empress Elizabeth of Austria -- I loved everything about it except her tragedies. Pataki made me care, deeply, about Sisi and the incredibly restrictive world that love brought her into. Wed as a very young woman to one of the most powerful Emperors in the world, Franz Joseph of Hapsburg fame and the Austrian empire, she is terrorized by her mother-in-law and isolated from the court. I never knew she existed before, and have been enthralled by her story. Amazing setting, and excellently nuanced characters. ( )
