While A Shift in the Water didn't have quite the same level of intensity as you would find within any of Patricia Eddy's military romances, it was no less of an emotional ride. Mara - a neonatal nurse with a mysterious illness - has accepted that death awaits her and does all that she can to enjoy her time left. Cade - a shifter Alpha who's been cursed to remain as his wolf - feels himself losing more and more sanity to the beast the longer that he stays trapped by the curse. What struck me most about this book was the individual struggles that both of the main characters were facing, and how they found solace and support from the other. Some books focus on instant love - here, there was an instant comfort between Mara and Cade, and a similar interest in trying to help the other simply survive. It was a lovely book, with the kind of romance that slowly builds between characters as they learn more about themselves through each other. The magic - and the heat! - made for a thrilling story that was easy to devour, and though the climax felt like it left more questions than answers, it's clear that there's a lot of story left to learn about this pack. "4 out of 5 stars! A woman, who's at the brink of dying, because she is unaware of her elemental water powers, recuses a malnourished wolf (or so she thought) which she later finds is a werewolf. Their bond grows quickly. Yet when those from their pasts come after them, will they be able to fight for one another or will they let everything rip them apart? This gripping tale kept me excited from page one. From the backstory..." I'm new to this author, but can say I wholeheartedly look forward to the next in this amazing series. lots of action. not the typical werewolf book either. I love the woven element of elementals into this series. the main couple have to fight to be together....conquering the proverbial dragons so they can become stronger as one. I get the inkling that Mara will continue to strengthen with hidden talents in the books to come. the book to me is about love and family....but family is what you make it. whether by blood born to you, blood drawn, shared experiences or choice. family is whatever you make of it. this shows many forms of that, and each one is fascinating. I love the fact the main characters basically have to fight to manifest their love. if it came too easy then they wouldn't realise how truly special it is. I look forward to learning more about these wonderful people. I also think Maras Aunt has a few stories for us to learn along the way. after all, she certainly is knowledgeable about much that Mara didn't know even existed. this book set up this world perfectly....slowly peeling back layers yet leaving us with many left to see. the readers are left wanting more, yet not livid at being left with a cliffhanger. I look forward to the next book in this series. I can only hope it's not too long until we can read book 2! I highly suggest this book for anyone into urban fantasy, paranormal books. you won't regret giving this author a chance! ( )
