You could be forgiven for mistaking this for Christmas stocking filler fodder; one of those humorous ‘toilet books’ filled with quick, cheap and dirty laughs to be read over several sittings. Sometimes it’s exactly that; the entries for the likes of Coldplay and Mumford and Sons skewer them on exactly the same points mildly irate Twitter users do (respectively ‘they’re boring’ and ‘they’re posh’). At its best though there’s a nicely surreal wit in play which hits the target whilst nailing its victims; Kraftwerk’s lost Christmas album, Morrissey going pantomime; Dylan collaborating with Liberace; The Residents being The Residents. There’s an amusing running gag about David Bowie (who doesn’t get an entry of his own but… well, you’ll see) and also a flagrantly inaccurate index with some extra one liners in there. It’s far from essential but the fact they’re copping to nicking an idea from Borges and applying it to a ridiculous but brilliant art form that they clearly unironically love and have a deep knowledge of makes for a surprisingly funny read for even the most uptight of music fans. We can all name the classic rock and pop albums of the last fifty years. But what about the great lost albums? The albums that fell behind the back of the musical sofa? The albums that, in a very real sense, have been completely made up by the authors of this book? It took a bestselling crime writer or three to hunt down these fifty lost classics, and an award-winning TV comedy scriptwriter to buy them a pint and make them write it. From the 60s to the 00s, with track listings and full histories, Great Lost Albums reveals the recordings that - just perhaps - never existed, but really should have done. Albums include: · Bob Dylan's legendary collaboration with Liberace · Joy Division's 'musical theatre' period · Coldplay's IKEA Sessions, including 'Conscious Uncoupling (See Leaflet for Details)' and 'In my Place (There's a Lovely HEMNES Shelving System)' · The Who's magisterial, abandoned rock opera 'Bingo Wizard' · Kraftwerk's hastily deleted Christmas album, featuring the melancholic classic 'I Wish to Return this Item' ...and many, many more.
