The place: New York. The time: the early 1980s. The scene: the red-hot comedy clubs, very late at night. The cast: five would-be stand-ups, their gags, their egos, their girls. The result: True Story, the downright hilarious novel about trying to be funny for fame, fortune, and fornication. Only Bill Maher could've written True Story, so he did. The star of Comedy Central's Politically Incorrect and a regular guest on The Tonight Show, Bill Maher is today one of America's hottest comics. But not so long ago, when even gas stations ran comedy stages, Bill Maher was there, too; True Story is his report from the front, a stageside table at the birth of the comedy boom. You'll laugh in all the right places. Scout's honor. Swear. Hey, it's a True Story.… (altro)

Only read about a quarter; hard to get beyond basic mysogynism

The fact that the lead characters are named Dick, Fat, Shit, Chink and Buck may give you an idea that this is not "To Kill a Mockingbird".

There are some good jokes scattered through the novel, although you can't help but think that they may have been picked up from the stand-ups the novel is based on. Also, female characters, by and large, are left in the background.

Still, I'm sure you've read worse humorous novels in your time. ( )

Bill Maher writes about what it's like trying to become a stand up comic by telling the story of 5 aspiring comedians: Dick, Fat, Shit, Chink and Buck. The names show you the depth of the humor. I think he does a good job showing the process and emotions involved in beginning a comedy career. He also seems to say that funny men, which I'm sure includes himself, are rather stunted in their sexual and emotional maturity. In the area of sex they don't seem to be able to progress beyond 15 year old adolescents. I love Maher's take on politics, but as a human being he and his five comics have some growing to do. ( )
