The 40th Anniversary Edition includes multicultural illustrations and an inclusive definition of family. Readers of many ethnic backgrounds and from a variety of family structures will find themselves depicted in the book's pages. The general message is that YOU are part of a family and YOUR family is special. It includes single parents, blended families, adopted children, multi-generational families, and so on.

I liked this book for a few different reasons. First I liked language throughout the book. The author used repetition in different places to emphasize the different aspects of a family. "Some uncles tell stories, funny stories, silly stories. Stories about mischief they did. Stories about adventures they had. Stories all about people you know." The second thing I liked about this book was the writing. The writing was engaging and interactive as it questioned the reader, "Can you name your aunts? Uncles? Grandparents? Do you know their first names?" Through this style of writing the author is able to get the reader thinking and engaged with the book or the people around them if perhaps, in a social setting. The third thing I liked were the illustrations. The illustrations in this book were unique for the reason that, two pages would be colored and then the next two in black and white. I feel that this style makes the read more interesting, and keeps readers curious about the text that goes with the picture. All in all I think that the 'big idea' of this book is to acknowledge that there are all kinds of families, and that everyone is a part of a unique family of their own. ( )

This book its a nice book for students to understand other cultures, other life styles and cultural differences just by showing different family's structures. ( )
