Charley Davidson has enough going on without having to worry about twelve hellhounds hot on her trail. She is, after all, incredibly pregnant and feeling like she could pop at any moment. But, just her luck, twelve deadly beasts from hell have chosen this time to escape onto our plane, and they've made Charley their target. And so she takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can't get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. Of course, if hellhounds aren't enough, Charley also has a new case to hold her attention: the decades-old murder of a newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows of the convent.
Add to that the still unsolved murder of her father, the strange behavior of her husband, and Charley's tendency to attract the, shall we say, undead, and she has her hands full...but also tied. While the angry hellhounds can't traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders like evil sentries, so Charley has been forbidden from leaving the sacred grounds. Luckily, she has her loyal team with her, and they're a scrappy bunch who won't let a few thirsty hellhounds deter them.
While the team scours the prophesies, searching for clues on the Twelve, for a way to kill them or at least send them back to hell, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they've accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. Their presence is comforting. But the good feelings don't last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life....… (altro)

Wasnt much action til the end. Then too much too fast. Charlie is also getting on my nerves. Still blindly jumping into things. Plot might have jumped the shark. ( )

Charley Davidson, our favorite grim reaper, is very pregnant and stuck on consecrated ground since twelve hellhounds would like nothing better than to tear her, and her unborn daughter, Beep, apart to stop a very old prophecy from coming to fruition. Needless to say, this is driving her crazy since she isn't used to being confined anywhere, at any time, and without coffee nonetheless! Luckily she has Cookie and Ubie's wedding to distract her, or you would think. If the PI can't go to the cases, the cases will come to the PI, so to speak.

I enjoyed this installment in the Charley Davidson series, but I think I like it better when Charley can get out and about and in trouble, truth be told. That being said, a lot of questions were answered, and I loved that. All in all, I liked way more about the book than I didn't, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to see where we will go next!

4/5 stars. ( )

Charley Davidson is nine months pregnant, living at an abandoned convent because she has to live on hallowed ground so the hellhounds who are after her can’t get to her.

Special Agent Carson brings Charley a case of a missing teenager and asks Charley to work her magic to try to find the girl.

Cookie, Charley’s best friend, is getting married to Charley’s Uncle Bob on the lawn of the convent.
There are hundreds of ghosts gathering on the front lawn of the convent but none of them are talking to Charley. They just stand there like they are waiting for something.

Duff, a ghost who Charley used to think was adorable for his stutter and shy ways, is starting to creep her out with the weird things he says like wondering what would what would happen if someone pushed Charley outside the boundaries of the sanctified grounds and how he loses his stutter at times.

Mr. Wong, the ghost who used to hover in the corner of Charley’s apartment, is now hovering in a corner at the convent.

Charley’s father who is a ghost now covertly tells her there are spies for Satan watching her and now she has to figure out who are the spies while making sure Cookie has a wonderful wedding and trying to solve the missing girl case.

As always, I loved this book. There was a lot going on and there were a few surprises near the end of the book…some good for Charley and some not so good. You’ll have to read it to find out.

5 fun 'it is what it is' stars. Yes I can see some of the problems which the negative reviews here have stated but I don't care. It's fun, the story arc is advancing, there were surprises and interesting new elements to the supernaturalness of it all. Still the new elements were not totally out of left field so I didn't really have the 'aww come on' reaction that I can have when urban fantasy book series drag on and everyone's powers just keep increasing.

I did have a problem with a couple of things though. the whole thing with Reyes' real family was a super big let down. Was really waiting for the blow up and eventual reconciliation and meeting scene. The way it happened was just meh and not real believable. And I think the whole 'hell hounds are our friends' thing was way out of left field. Seemed like something the author changed her mind about between the last book and this one. Like she wrote herself into a hole and had to fudge a bit to get out of it.

So the fun humor was there. I couldn't wait to listen to this one on disc which is they way I really prefer them but it would have taken the library months to get it so... There was plenty of sarcasm and goofiness and sweet hotness with Reyes so the good elements were there. There was a case to solve so we still go that even though the arc is picking up speed.

Sign me up for the next one because, HELLO! big cliffhanger! ( )

I knew (sort of) how this one ended and had put off starting it until the release of the ninth book was closer, but actually it's not quite as cliff-hanging an ending as I was expecting.

I love this series; I love the humour, the snark, and the inclusion of a lot of old Christian mythology. I like the way the author conveys the horror of bad things happening without making the reader wallow in it.

Eighth Grave After Dark is both the culmination and the deepening of the overall story arc. We have the ultimate family reunion in addition to the cold and hot cases Charley is trying to solve. Reyes becomes a bit more human too, if you'll excuse the expression. The author's depiction of hell brought to mind scenes from Constantine and were incredibly effective.

The ending is ... ok. It's a neat and tidy way of getting around what might have proven problematic in future plots, but it works for me. I'm very much looking forward to the ninth book. ( )
