Many know James Garner as Jim Rockford. That is understandable because The Rockford Fileswas one of the most popular private-eye series of all time. It ran for a good portion of the 1970s, and aged well in syndication through the 1980s. Rockford was quick with a quip, crafty with a fake business card, and could drive the wheels off his gold Firebird. What many don't know is that James Garner was a "car guy" long before he played Jim Rockford, the patented J turn was a piece of cake for the lifelong racer and hobbyist. Hollywood had had its share of car guys over the years, James Dean notoriously in the 1950s, followed by the likes of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and James Garner in the 1960s. From starring in Grand Prix, tackling the rigors of Baja off-road racing, forming his own road racing team (called American International Racing), driving the Pace Car at the Indy 500, all the way to his stunt driving in The Rockford Files, James Garner was a true enthusiast. James Garner actively escalated his participation as a racing driver after the making of Grand Prix, and somehow walked the line between acting, television production company boss, and motorsport. He appeared to be able to keep them all balanced with little interference among them. James Garner's Motoring Lifecovers the cars he owned and drove, the cars he raced, his tour of duty as a racing team owner, his great racing film, the drivers on his team as well as the drivers he competed against. This book tells you the whole story of James Garner: racing actor, racing team owner, and automotive enthusiast.… (altro)

I'm familiar with James Garner from his TV and movie roles. I never knew about his interest in cars and car racing. This well-illustrated book nicely covers that aspect of his life. An enjoyable book. Short and an easy read. You do not have to be a car or racing buff to enjoy this book. ( )

This was a fascinating book!
Any car enthusiast or fan of James Garner should add this book to their collection. It is filled with wonderful photos of James Garner with fellow actors and with the many cars he has owned or has driven in his movies, TV shows and during his racing years. It was interesting to find out that Steve McQueen was actually his neighbor! I especially liked the chapters about his movie Grand Prix and his days filming The Rockford Files. It was interesting to find out that he owned his own car racing team and did off-road racing too. Matt Stone has compiled a wonderful, all-inclusive, informative book about James Garner's "car life" many of us never knew he had. This book has piqued my interest about an actor I have always admired in the many movies I have seen him in; my favorite ones being The Thrill Of It All and Support Your Local Sheriff. I was thrilled to have won this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewer's Program. ( )

Lovely book about a great guy. Not much to say about this one, except that if you love James Garner (which I do) or cars (which I do, sort of), you'll probably be fascinated by it. If neither of those things really do anything for you, then it's definitely not for you. I've been a Garner fan since I was a tiny tot and used to watch Maverick religiously every week. Over the years, I've read a lot about him, but didn't really know much about his devotion to cars and racing. This book remedied that situation, and I certainly enjoyed it. Many thanks to Early Reviewers and the publisher for giving me the chance to read it. ( )

JAMES GARNER’S MOTORING LIFE pays homage to the role Mr. Garner played away from the screen both big and small. While he won fame and fortune for his rolls as Bret Maverick and later as Jim Rockford on television, and starred in more than fifty films in his career, his no overriding passion outside his family and his work was racing.
For several years he was owner of the American International racing team. He put cars on the track at Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring among other courses. He also had teams in the Baja 500.
As is shown in this new book from CAR TECH publications, Mr. Garner loved cars. He was the owner/operator of a vast selection of classic cars in his private life and as an avid race driver.
In just about 160 pages, MOTORING LIFE captures images of the cars he was associated with along with vast descriptions of the cars, the times, and what was happening in Mr. Garner’s life at the time.
Sure to be a hit with both fans for the star and the car, this is a fun look at another side of a fascinating man and his passion. ( )
