I like the simplistic nature of this book and the illustrations that chow Betsy's relation to the American flag. ( )

This biography starts off by immediately introducing Betsy’s love and go to activity when it is said that she enjoys quilts and sewing. Being born into a family of Quakers, this makes the story even more interesting because of the time period. Set in a time during the Revolutionary War, Betsy faces serious hardships while not only losing John but having to take over the family business. This leads to the introduction of women's empowerment during this time period. This book is really good for younger women and even older women to see an example of a young woman’s story of evolving into something great. ( )

Betsy Ross was born into a family that were Quakers. Betsy enjoyed creating quilts and sewing, she even won prizes for her work. Betsy eventually began working outside the home and met John Ross whom she married even though he wasn't a Quaker. The Revolutionary War began and even though they knew about the fighting they still worked and set up a small shop. John joined the army where he later died due to an explosion and Betsy ran her business all alone. George Washington called upon Betsy to sew a flag he wanted representing the thirteen colonies, Betsy helped better his idea for the flag and she sewed the first American flag. She became well known for her sewing and her business grew bigger. Betsy retired at age 75 from sewing. I enjoyed reading this book because I had no idea who made the first American flag and now I do. I was shocked at how many husbands Betsy Ross had, but I can see from reading multiple books that this happened often. These people really worked hard back in those times and they never let anything stop them. ( )

Betsy Ross grew up as a Quaker and 1 of 17 children. As a girl, she was taught how to sew in order to help the family. She practiced her needlework in school and entered contests. Later on, she met and married John Ross, leaving the Quaker faith. Together they opened a shop in Pennsylvania. John went off to join the war and died in the aftermath of an explosion. Betsy was later asked by General Washington to make a flag, and she even helped design it. Betsy remarried two more times, had children and grandchildren, and joined the Society of Free Quakers. Years later after Betsy's passing, her grandson William J. Canby made Betsy's story known to the states.
This was a very educational story. Not only did I learn about Betsy Ross and the American Flag, but I learned interesting facts about the American Revolution time period also. I think this book would be a great supplemental resource in a social studies lesson. Also for an art lesson, the end of the book shows how to fold and cut Betsy's 5 point star. Super neat! ( )

Betsy Ross is very relatable to students in the K-3 grades. They will enjoy learning about her design and creation of the American flag. I enjoyed the pictures and the easy to read text in this book. ( )
