First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt worked tirelessly for her country on domestic and international fronts. In this informational tale, her hotdog picnic to celebrate the visit of British royalty to the United States forges a relationship that will see both nations through the horrors of World War II. Author’s Note. Hot Dog! Eleanor Roosevelt Throws a Picnic, is an excellent read for young readers. This historical informational book is a great read for students who want to learn about famous people throughout history. The story begins by telling readers about Eleanor's love of hot dogs. The setting is 1930s America where times were hard. Eleanor is depicted as having evolved from a shy young woman, to a vocal First Lady, when the British Royal couple visit the White House she decides to throw a picnic and hot dogs are on the menu. This amusing read with vibrant and lively illustrations is a fun way to introduce historical facts to children. The illustrations for this book are created with watercolors and ink. Genre: Historical Fiction Medium: Watercolors, acrylic This book is set when Franklin Roosevelt was our president. The story talks about how Eleanor, had to do a lot of the traveling, and fancy dinners for her husband, because he was too sick. Eleanor invites the King and Queen of England to the States for dinner, and she wants to have hot dogs for their meal, because she loves them, and there aren't any hot dogs at the other fancy dinners she has to go to. People are outraged that she is feeing a King and Queen hot dogs, but she does it anyways, and years later when they meet again for another picnic, they have hot dogs again. This is a great example of a historical fiction book, because it talks about really people and events, such as Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the King and Queen of England, and WWII, but it's made into a fun story, so not all of the facts may be true. I think students would love this book, and it would be a fun one to use when introducing a presidents unit. In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth planned to visit America. Eleanor Roosevelt thought there was not a more American way to entertain them than to have a picnic with hotdogs included. Though many Americans were horrified at the thought of serving the Queen hotdogs, Eleanor stuck to her menu and the King and Queen seemed to enjoy the picnic as well as the hotdogs. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
