When a construction accident takes out the mayor of Mars' largest domed city, Pierce Steadman is elevated into the role. Tasked with overseeing the reconstruction of Magnopolis after the Great War, he sets out to separate the city from its Earth-inspired past and to restore hope to its population. Yet other forces also have designs on the city. As references to God disappear from the Network Archives, those forces unleash a towering destructive robot unlike any other: Ionotatron. This was an interesting little story. I was concerned at first when I received it and realized it was book 2 in a series but, while there were a few things that I would have liked more information about and that were probably explained in the first book, I found that I had little trouble following along. I also didn't realize how much of a religious theme there was to the overall story but that was, at least in this book, mostly in the background and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story (I generally don't enjoy books with strong religious themes). There were places where more information and description would have been nice (especially in the creation of new/updated robots) but the flow was good and the pace was steady and the was just enough excitement to keep the story moving. My actual rating is more of a 3.25 or 3.5 but I decided to upgrade because there really wasn't anything I truly disliked. ( )
