A great resource for teaching economics, this book connects history, geography, and economics by telling the story of money throughout time while touching on important economics concepts. Fun cartoon illustrations accompany the informational text. Author’s Note, Bibliography.

I think this book would be good for upper elementary. It is a "lengthier" picture book that gives you some information that I feel like we don't really talk about. Money! I think this book would be great in history or math lessons (when using money) because this book gives you insight into how money works, where it comes from, and why it comes in so many different forms. This book is about of course money! It starts from ancient times to about modern day. In the ancient times, instead of coins or paper, people started out with just trading. Then people started interest. So if someone borrows one sack of grain from your, they owe your two sacks of grain. Then the Romans started using coins for currency and made people pay taxes. And at least 1500 years later Italy started modern banking. And that’s where our modern money system came from.

I thought this book was very informational. The author wrote in a way that I could understand everything very well. And the illustrations gave examples of what the author was trying to say. Even though this book was a little shorter than I expected, there was a lot of information. In the authors note, he tells us how even he doesn’t really understand money. ( )

This book tells about all the banking aspects. It has simplified information which we be great for a middle school reader. I like it because it does contain useful information it still holds humor within as well. ( )

The History of Money: From Bartering to Banking is written at a middle school reading level. Using plain text vignettes and hand-sketched illustrations, the authors trace the evolution of the modern economy's most traded resource, money. Issues like surplus, scarcity, bartering, borrowing, banking, and economic decision-making are simplified to a level that is useful to middle schoolers, while maintaining a humor and wit that can appeal to older students.
