This is a great novel to use to introduce Plains Indian culture into a classroom. The illustrations seem to accurately portray Plains Indian clothing and items. The side notes in the story line that depicts Iktomi's thinking also explains the clothing worn by him. I think the story encompasses a lot of Plains Indian culture, from their clothing, mode of transportation, to their belief in the spirits in nature.

Iktomi and the Ducks by Paul Goble
This is a story about a native name Iktomi. He is a trickster and tricks the ducks into getting captured and becoming his dinner. Iktomi however is tricked by a coyote.

I think this is a funny story and know students would just love because it is funny to see the Ikatomi get tricked. I think is a clever story about how to not be tricky or greedy because it may come back to haunt you.

I would use this story with Pre-K to Kindergarten students. I would discuss the life skills of generosity and honesty. I tell them I am going to read a story about what can happen if you do not follow those life skills. ( )
