Non riuscire a pensare di poter conciliare la vita quotidiana con l’amore per un uomo è quanto di peggio ci possa essere, quando poi questa persona è colui che è riuscito a conquistare la tua fiducia e amicizia è ancor più deprecabile e denota soltanto immaturità e grettezza d’animo. Troppo esasperante, a mio avviso, il personaggio femminile per potermi far apprezzare veramente il libro, che in alcune parti è riuscito solo a infastidirmi. It's all sex, which is not to say I don't like a decent scene every now and then in my reading, but 2/3 of the book are simply descriptions of the different types of sex Oliver and Lola wind up having - which is not a spoiler, it's the whole basis for the plot. While Lola and Oliver are at least three-dimensional characters, most of the dialogue and descriptions of things felt forced and unnatural - I don't know anyone who talks or describes things in the way these two hapless lovers do. Basically, the phrasing sucked, and the believe-ability of the phrasing is pretty much the only thing these types of books usually have going for them. Lola quickly discovers the pitfalls of trying to have both, but rather than dealing with the problem, she allows herself to become overwhelmed, making her a less than sympathetic character. Neither Lola nor Oliver are developed well as characters because most of their inner monologues deal with their feelings about each other rather than how they will attack their personal issues, leaving Oliver to appear a little wishy-washy and Lola a bit of a selfish diva. Overall, Dark Wild Night, unfortunately, does not live up to the first two installments of the Wild Seasons series. 3 1/2 stars. Oliver is smart, thoughtful, witty, humble. He's got his shit together and he knows what he wants - and that's Lola. He's not afraid to look stupid, he's not afraid to be vulnerable, he's not afraid to say I love you first. He's seriously the entire package.
I obviously could go on and on about Oliver.
Which brings me back to Lola and why I rarely venture into M/F these days.
Again, like its predecessor Mia in [b:Sweet Filthy Boy|18775297|Sweet Filthy Boy (Wild Seasons, #1)|Christina Lauren|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1395723782s/18775297.jpg|26751379], I have to remind myself that this is NA after all. This is about finding yourself and learning from one's mistakes and undergoing growth. Ugh. So it comes as no surprise whatsoever when that tried, true, and trite foil happens every stinking time - you know, the one where bad decisions are made and feelings are hurt. I knew it was coming, I was prepared for it, and I pushed through and endured.
This writing duo has never failed in creating fabulous males and depicting them in all their steamy, smexy glory. They're so good in fact, I'll continue to give them a pass and overlook that repetitive female annoyance.
Thus all 4 stars go to Oliver. (
