The period of Tudor rule in England (1485-1603) marked the appearance of an unprecedented opulence in fashions worn by royalty and members of the nobility, with social rank often reflected in attire. This monumental study by a brilliant and imaginative scholar examines that colourful period in fashion history, from the reign of Henry VII through that of Elizabeth I.Because continental fashions heavily influenced clothing styles of the English nobility, the text includes brief introductory reviews of garments worn in France, Italy, Spain, and Germany. Each chapter focuses on costumes of a particular period, meticulously delineating not only the elegance of court dress but also describing the quotidian garments of the middle and lower classes - from tradespeople and common sailors to the peasantry and even court jesters. In addition to investigating an extraordinarily wide range of fashionable garb, the author meticulously describes elaborate headgear, hairstyles, jewelry, collars, footwear, and other wardrobe accessories.Composed of two books bound as one, this carefully researched and profusely illustrated volume includes 1,000 black-and-white figures (including diagrams showing the construction of various garments and head coverings), 24 halftones, and 22 full-colour plates, nearly all taken from contemporary sources, which enliven this authoritative and exhaustive study of period clothing, an indispensable resource for fashion designers and historians and a dazzling pageant of living history for the general reader.… (altro)

When I first got into Tudor era costuming, this book was an incredible find in our college library. Since those early years, and the greater information we have been able to uncover, and with the newer publications, this book has lost its glamor. He removed cod pieces from his redrawings. His pattern basics have not stood the test of actual recreation. There are aspects of this book that are still helpful or not covered in more recent books, and some images he redrew that have been found again, but for costuming in the Tudor period there are better books and far more images available to work with. In the past people have discounted some of Mr. Norris choices and now we have found out that he was more correct than people had previously thought. ( )

1485-1603 831 pages: A basic overview of all clothing from the Tudor period (from Henry thru Elizabeth). Touches BREIFLY on the landsknecht as one of Henry's favorite groups to rip off fashion from. Nice as a general reference and starting point, but I would dig a lot deeper before using any of it's information out of hand. ( )

No, his scholarship doesn't match Janet Arnold's. Still, this is one of the most useful, broad-based compendiums on the Tudor era I've ever found. In addition to the costume and pattern drawings, it's chock full of historical snippets; names, dates and facts about key players; drawings for jewelry and other accessories; names of fabrics and their various colors; and much, much more. It even includes names, dates, spouses, offspring and mistresses of key continental monarchs and courts of the period. ( )

Not all that good, because it relies on re-drawings, but that's what was best when this book was originally written. There are now much better books for those who want to re-create Tudor clothing. However, it's a decent place for someone inexperienced to begin.

And i am very fond of those 1920's drawings. ( )
