[680] WASHINGTON. - A painting by J. E. Buttersworth. The Washington was the first American-flagged steamship to operate in the regular trans-Atlantic service. Built in 1847, she served between New York and Bremershaven, having her cost of operation partly defrayed by an American subsidy and partly by a subsidy from the City of Bremen. After ten years the American subsidy was withdrawn, and the Bremen Line collapsed. The Washington went into the gold-rush service to California.
