"With acerbic wit ... Shane Burcaw describes the challenges he faces as a twenty-one-year-old with spinal muscular atrophy. From awkward handshakes to having a girlfriend and everything in between, Shane handles his situation with humor and a 'you-only-live-once' perspective on life. While he does talk about everyday issues that are relatable to teens, he also offers an eye-opening perspective on what it is like to have a life-threatening disease"--… (altro)

Found Shane on YouTube ( Squirmy and Grubs ) where he posts daily videos along with his girlfriend Hannah. I fell in love with both of them as a couple because their love seems so unconditional. They feed off each others humor and sarcasm and yet through these videos, you can see how they respect and learn from each other everyday.

This book for the most part was very interesting. I learned a lot about SMA and the ways people affected adjust their lives to live normally. I was inspired to ignore the smaller things in life that get under my skin because their are bigger and worse things that are happening.

The thing that bothered me about the book was Shane's description, behaviour towards others with mental disabilities. I'm not sure if he was adding humor or he was belittling them. Shane is very intelligent and it appeared that he was above them in a few instances. Almost like he was too good to be associated in their environment. He seperated himself from others while at a camp instead of integrating himself and sharing his passion with others to make them smile.

He has found an angel in Hannah and I wish them nothing but the best. I will continue to watch their trials and tribulation in life. ( )

At first I felt kind of bad even wanting to read this book, because I didn't want to be disrespectful of anyone who deals with challenges that I can't even imagine, but once I started, I had a hard time stopping reading it! His voice is so strong and funny and insightful, and guess what...he is sharing it with us. He is a typical young man, with a heavy dose of muscular dystrophy, that is positive and fun-loving. He cusses, masturbates, falls in love, shares his experiences as a young man and one who is considered "other." I literally laughed out loud and then got misty-eyed. This is a must read for all therapists and teachers, in my opinion. Everyone can wait for their copy next. I am very interested in following his blog now...just as a person of age I will need to figure that out first. His parents and family are amazing too. Thank you Shane! ( )

The forest of pube-y leg hair sprouting from my brother's calf bristles the tip of my nose as he stands over me on the floor of our rented minibus, yanking my shorts off.

However, at some point, it occurred to me that no matter how much I cried, or how sorry I felt for myself, my game was never going to come back. I realized that I just needed to accept what had happened and move on. I was wasting a beautiful summer day by sitting inside being sad about what happened.
In my life today, I try to approach problems similarly to the way I learned to handle the Nintendo situation (with less crying, of course). First, I try to assess whether a particular problem warrants getting upset about. To do this, I ask myself a simple question: In ten years, will my life be irreparably and negatively changed because of the problem? If the answer is no, which it usually is, I immediately force myself to stop worrying about the problem.
These are problems that, no matter how you look at them, just plain old suck--a lot. But therein lies the key to step two of my method. As long as I'm not thinking about these problems, they can't bring me down, so I simply don't think about them! It's not rocket science. There's nothing I can do to solve any of those above-mentioned problems, so what good will come from spending me time being sad about them? Instead, I focus my mind and energy on doing things that make me happy like laughing, joking, eating, and spending time with friends. The more I think about it, the more I realize that there really is no other way to live.
My method for dealing with problems might not work for everyone, but for me, positivity and happiness are always possible. Always.
My family used to have an old wine bottle with a cork in the top that we called the Crabby Jar. Whenever my brother or I became whiny, as little kids are prone to do, Mom would pull out the Crabby Jar. This jar was magical, because it held all of the Crabbies we had ever put into it. Mom would the pull the cork out, we would quickly blow out our Crabbies, and she would quickly jam the cork back so no Crabbies could escape. Once we completed this ritual, there was no physical way to remain angry or sad, since we had literally dispelled the source of those negative emotions into the jar. The underlying idea behind the Crabby Jar is a pretty good indication of the values that my parents stressed. You are in control of your emotions; the choice to be happy is as easy as blowing out your Crabbies.
