History. Literary Criticism. Nonfiction. HTML:

A collection of the most well-known and treasured writings and speeches of Dr. King, available for the first time as an ebook

The Essential Martin Luther King, Jr. is the ultimate collection Dr. King's most inspirational and transformative speeches and sermons, accessibly available for the first time as an ebook. Here, in Dr. King's own words, are writings that reveal an intellectual struggle and growth as fierce and alive as any chronicle of his political life could possibly be. Included amongst the twenty selections are Dr. King's most influential and persuasive works such as "I Have a Dream" and "Letter from Birmingham Jail" but also the essay "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence," and his last sermon "I See the Promised Land," preached the day before he was assassinated.

Published in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, The Essential Martin Luther King, Jr. includes twenty selections that celebrate the life's work of our most visionary thinkers. Collectively, they bring us Dr. King in many roles--philosopher, theologian, orator, essayist, and author--and further cement the most powerful and enduring words of a man who touched the conscience of the nation and world.

This is a great introduction to the famous non-violent, radical, and prophetic black leader.

And he was a radical. Many white liberals at the time thought that if you just kept putting off the freedom struggle and accept injustice “for now”, then (maybe!) one day it’ll be easier and we’ll do it when it gets easy!

...................

Violence does not bear good fruit; (“do not destroy!” Crummell); but there is basically never progress without tension, and our comfort is not a divine right—really it is often not even any good at all.

.... Like Friedan, to take a parallel, he was kinda the nice radical, the radical who believed in love, the radical who respected everybody. But they were both still radicals. They wanted extreme change when America at large wanted “Pleasant Valley Sunday” and the cult of comfort.

.....................

What courage it is to take people in the midst of tragedy, and to tell them that tragedy is not senseless, that civilization is worth having, that metaphors are worth making, that wisdom has a way.

I have recently read the Taylor Branch books about Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. This made me hungry for his original words and thoughts.

Reading his original texts led to an appreciating of his skills as a thinker and writer. The man was truly a giant among men. ( )
