"The international award-winning, bestselling phenomenon, now available in English for the first time. Tomorrow, the sun will rise for the first time in 40 days. Thirty minutes of daylight will herald the end of the polar night in Kautokeino, a small village in northern Norway, home to the indigenous Sami people. But in the last hours of darkness, a precious artifact is stolen: an ancient Sami drum. The most important piece in the museum's collection, it was due to go on tour with a UN exhibition in a few short weeks. Hours later, a man is murdered. Mattis, one of the last Sami reindeer herders, is found dead in his gumpy. Are the two crimes connected? In a town fraught with tension--between the indigenous Samis fighting to keep their culture alive, the ultra-Lutheran Scandinavian colonists concerned with propagating their own religion, and the greedy geologists eager to mine the region's ore deposits--it falls to two local police officers to solve the crimes. Klemet Nango, an experienced Sami officer, and Nina Nansen, his much younger partner from the south of Norway, must find the perpetrators before it's too late... THIS EDITION INCLUDES A READING GROUP GUIDE"--… (altro)

Interesting detail and viewpoint. I enjoyed hearing the more political dimension. Comes across as well-researched and urgent. ( )

English review

In Skuggorna vänder tillbaka are Klemet Nango and Nina Hansen från the reindeer cops back to once again solve a murder mystery. The book starts off with Erik, a reindeer breeder dies when a reindeer herd is going to cross a strait. It seemed to be an accident, but then the mayor is found dead close to a holy cliff and then several more people are killed. Are the murders linked to the death of the reindeer breeder or is it all a coincidence?

I read Fyrtio dagar utan skugga in 2014 and that was a book that I really liked. To be able to read a crime novel that takes place in Lapland, Sweden was really something new. So, I was really happy to see that a sequel was on its way. In this book, there are some mysterious murders, but there are also conflicts between the Sami population and those that want the city Hammarfest to grow and become the arctic answer to Dubai. A lot of money is at stake och Sami's way of life and traditions is threatening the city's progress. Klemet and Nina have to investigate to find out if the murders have anything to Erik, the reindeer herders death or if his death was just a tragic accident. The book is like a puzzle where everything that happens is a piece that needs to be fitted to the right place, and I like that I couldn't figure out the plot right away.

However, I think that the story in the first book was a bit better, for instance, I missed a certain person that was in the first book, but not in this book, and the mere mentioning of him made me a bit sad. But, the book is certainly worth reading and you don't have to read the first book to keep up with the story in this book.

I want to thank Piratförlaget for providing me with a free copy for an honest review! ( )

Thank you Trapdoor for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

A priceless local relic is stolen from Kautokeino, a village in Lapland, that lies in the middle of the isolated snowy tundra. Two reindeer polices, Klemet Nango, an experienced police, and Nina Nansen, fresh from the local police academy, sends out to investigate the crime. Then a local reindeer herder is murdered and Klemet and Nina suspect that the two events are linked to each other.

The Sámis in Sweden, Norway, and Finland has during century’s, just like other indigenous populations, been oppressed, and one thing the church did against them was burning their drums, there used to be thousands of them, now there are only 71 documented left. I have been for years fascinated by the Sámis so that made the experience of reading this book so much greater. Because even though this is a crime novel, it’s also a glimpse into the Sámi world, both the present one and the one the high power was hell bent on destroying when they sent up people to colonize and make Christians out of the natives.

This book was truly well written, I mean it took me days to get through because I just couldn’t skim any part because it was so well-written and interesting to read. Of course, the characters was great even though the police, for instance, fell into the risk of being stereotypes, bad cop, good cop, a new cop, but I didn't mind that. One character I really came to like was Aslak, the reindeer herder that preferred the old traditional way of herding reindeer instead the modern way with snow scooters.

The only part that I didn’t like was the abrupt ending; suddenly the book was just finished and I wanted more. I hope Olivier Truc writes more books, because this, his debut book was marvelous!

4.5 stars!
