My Thoughts: Have you ever wanted or dreamed about having super powers? I definitely have. I’d be willing to put up with any isolation that would bring. It would be really awesome to do something extraordinary and supernatural. Although as most books and movies show, sometimes it’s just not as awesome as we think it would be.
Shock Me is the first book in the Shock Me series. I had minimal expectations for this book and the author surpassed every one of them without breaking a sweat. The writing was pretty good, fairly solid for the young adult genre.
I absolutely loved the main character, Donna. She was so great and was the perfect balance of real life girl and book heroine. The other characters making up Donna’s supporting cast were interesting to read about. Even those that I really didn’t like, I was still interested in reading more about all of them. It also gives readers a more diverse base of characters to relate with.
The writing style was pretty cool. The author switched between the different character’s points of view. That was awesome, especially when it was for the same event/happenstance. It gave the book more depth, where it may have fallen flat if told only through Donna’s eyes.
The plot itself wasn’t the most unusual, but did have a few unexpected little twists. I read through it in one sitting (slightly prolonged) and don’t regret it. It was shorter than I thought it would be, but once you’re reading it didn’t make much of a difference. It didn’t end at an awkward point or an aggravating cliff hanger. It ended and left you with enough unanswered questions that if you enjoyed reading it then you’ll want to read the second book.
I really enjoyed Shock Me. I will be reading the second book when it becomes available. If you’re already a fan of young adult novels then you’ll definitely enjoy Shock Me. If you’re into the superhero idea in a book, you’ll probably enjoy this. And in case there is any doubt, I would recommend Shock Me.
