A beautifully illustrated story set in the traditional style of an Ethiopian folktale. Little Almaz has lost her mother and after a year of mourning, her father announces he will go to a village far away and return with a new wife. Almaz is excited to meet her new stepmother but when they meet, Kibret keeps her head down and her eyes to the ground. Almaz tries again and again without success to win over her new stepmother's affections. Frustrated, Almaz asks her wise old grandfather for help. Her grandfather tells her to bring him the hair from a lion's tail and he will help her. What she discovers over the course of many days of trying to obtain this hair (without getting eaten!) is that sometimes things seem difficult, but if she is patient and stays the course, she can overcome whatever daunting obstacles are in her way. This book is about a small girl that is trying to get to know her dad's new wife since her mother died not too long ago. She tries to get advice from a family member and asks what should she do in this certain situation. The family member was her grandfather and he told her that he would tell her the answer to her question as long as she would go in search of a lion and bring back hair from the lion's tail. It took the girl a while to finally get the hair and she came back to her grandad for the answer. He told her that the way to solve the problem was by the same steps she used in order to recieve hair from the lion's tail. This story is a great way of telling children that there are certain situations that they can personally overcome.

She went to her wise grandfather for advice and he told Almaz he would teach her how to win her new mother over if she went and pulled the hair of a lion's tail first. This actually taught Almaz a lesson through trial and error. Every day for weeks, Almaz would take a piece of meat to the lion's cave and get step by step closer to achieving her goal when finally she did it. This taught her that it just takes time to be loved by her new mother. Her new mother wasn't giving her attention and affection like she wanted at first but it finally grew. Patience is a virtue and when people are patient, good things can happen.
