I really like this one -- maybe not as a picture book for the littlest kids, but the great language and wonderful landscapes draw me in. Reminds me of Shawn Tan in both artistry and theme. ( )

The Yes is a cleverly written story that can be read on many levels. The literal text follows a fantastical creature on a journey. Deeper understandings reveal studies in mindset, determination, and achievement

The text is confusing for a childrens book but the message is good. It took me a couple readings to be able to read aloud to children and even with some pre information it was complicated for the young preschool age. My older children could understand the message but didn't have too much love for the book. ( )

In this boldly-colored picture book, the great big orange thing called Yes has a where to go. To get there, though, he must get past many obstacles. He must also get away from the hoards of Nos that want to stop him. Can he?

My children (ages 6 and 4) and I truly enjoyed this book. The text is poetic and imaginative. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. I worried that my children might struggle to understand, but they "got it" easily and seemed to have no problem following the story or retelling it in their own words.

The story is of "the Yes" who goes out into the Where and comes upon some things that it seems may be difficult or even impossible. The "Nos" all try to assure "the Yes" that it shouldn't even try. But "the Yes" says a brave "Yes!" and does each thing.

This lesson in perseverance is a delight.

(I rated it lower than I would have based on the fact that the way it was sent, I cannot allow my children to keep it on their bookshelves or read it without my help in managing the pages. The collection of loose pages with no cover or even staples is a bit frustrating.) ( )
