"When Vivien Walker left her home in the Mississippi Delta, she swore never to go back, as generations of the women in her family had. But in the spring, nine years to the day since she'd left, that's exactly what happens--Vivien returns, fleeing from a broken marriage and her lost dreams for children. What she hopes to find is solace with "Bootsie," her dear grandmother who raised her, a Walker woman with a knack for making everything all right. But instead she finds that her grandmother has died and that her estranged mother is drifting further away from her memories. Now Vivien is forced into the unexpected role of caretaker, challenging her personal quest to find the girl she herself once was. But for Vivien things change in ways she cannot imagine when a violent storm reveals the remains of a long-dead woman buried near the Walker home, not far from the cypress swamp that is soon to give up its ghosts. Vivien knows there is now only one way to rediscover herself--by uncovering the secrets of her family and breaking the cycle of loss that has haunted her them for generations"--… (altro)

Not one of her better books. A little long winded and whiny for me. ( )

Soaked in sadness, but filled with redemption.
Feels a lot like a Kristen Hannah novel.

Long Time Gone. Karen White. 2014. I can’t stay away from Karen White’s books. As much as I like murder mysteries, literary fiction, and Catholic books, I do love a well-written modern romance every once in a while. This is the story of 4 generations of Mississippi mothers and daughters that is told in flashbacks going back from the Prohibition era to the present day. For one reason or another all of the mothers have deserted their children. Vivian comes home from California because she has nowhere else to go. A skeleton is found when a cypress tree is uprooted by a storm, and Vivian solves the mystery, unravels the story of the mothers, and heals herself. This is great beach book! ( )

"If only I could have told my eighteen-year-old self that leaving home was like leaving behind a part of myself, that the pull of the land and the muddy river and cotton fields would tether me to this place like an umbilical cord no matter how far I ran."
