Guilty pleasure! Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s got the setting, cool characters, lots of action, and I loved it. ( )

This is definitely in the same vein as 'Meg'... but in Loch Ness; quite good: a murder mystery serves as an excuse for trying to solve a monster mystery. Ignoring the hokey 'love interest' this story refers back to the Crusades and how the Knights Templar get involved with Nessie. The clues and mysteries keep dragging you on, much as in 'The Da Vinci Code'. Is there or isn't there a monster fish? People ARE being killed, but why now? After all these years why are there suddenly more sightings? And how could someone fake the teeth marks on the bodies...and why would they?

As an aside, I lived in northern Scotland for a while and I can vouch for the Scots pronunciation in the book...remember that an apostrophe is a glottal-stop; and you should be able to work out the vowel sounds. ( )

After surviving a submersible disaster while researching elusive giant squid in the Atlantic, marine biologist Zachary Wallace is summoned home to Scotland, where he is not altogether surprised to learn his estranged father is on trial for murder. Upon arriving, however, he discovers that his father's supposed crimes are not the only excitement in town: someone -- or something -- is attacking tourists at Loch Ness.

It feels at times like "Nessie" has been done to death, but I appreciated the ways in which the details in this story deviated from the traditional legend. Because aspects of the plots are so often implausible and I have difficulty with suspension of disbelief, I read thrillers rather infrequently. Still, I enjoyed this one well enough under those circumstances. Definitely a page-turner. ( )

My Thoughts:
I loved this book. It's the only one of Steve Alten's books that was not part of the Meg series that I have really liked. This is fantastic! Something lives in the Loch - no surprise right? Well it's not what you think lives there. This is truly a page turner. The twist and turns of the story are enough to make you dizzy, but you'll be able to put the book down...right after the next chapter, or maybe the next. ( )
