Another fun example of a cozy mystery, just thought the pacing could have sped up a little. But that might just be me! I maintain that if you want a cozy, this series fits the bill in a satisfying way.

I like the intersection of make-believe and real history in these books, with various members of the Vanderbilt family becoming much larger than life than I ever imagined them before. As well as interesting sections of Newport. The mystery was pretty good here, I didn’t figure it out as I did in the first book. (

What a great read. Newport, R.I. is on my bucket list. I love reading about the old homes in the seaside resort town. The lives of the Vanderbilts has always fascinated me. I have toured the Biltmore in Asheville, N. C numerous times. The author does a great job describing these beautiful homes. Because of her description of Marble House, I had to take a virtual tour of Marble House.
Besides getting to know more about these gorgeous homes, there is a murder mystery thrown in, so it's a win-win for me. When the book opens, Emma Cross has just sent a suitor away. Emma is a poor relations of the Vanderbilts and she is a society reporter for the local paper; however, she has her sites on being a full fledged reporter. When a murder happens at Marble House and the daughter of the house (Emma's cousin) goes missing, Emma is determined to find her cousin AND to solve the murder. Luckily she has help along the way to keep her from harm. (

Emma Cross' cousin, Consuelo Vanderbilt, is being forced into a marriage with the Duke of Marlborough but she is fighting all the way. When she disappears appear after a tea with "future" family and a murder of the fortune teller brought in for entertainment, Emma has two tasks, find Consuelo as well as the murderer.

This series is very entertaining - bringing back the old days of the turn of the century in 1900 as well as old-fashioned social requirements and expectations. We have a heroine not afraid to step out of the norm. (

Another murder, another Mansion, and Emmaline Cross is determined to find out who and why. At the same time she tries to support her cousin, Consuelo Vanderbilt who is about to become a victim of a forced marriage.

What appealed to me about this particular book in the series is the honest retelling of the tragedy of Consuelo’ Vanderbilt’s life. Dictated to by an overbearing, society climbing mother, Alva Vanderbilt tried and successfully controlled her daughter’s life in every imaginable way. Unfortunately Consuelo Vanderbilt comes to realize “There are realities that cannot be ignored and rules that cannot be broken, or chaos results.”

This is a well written murder mystery that takes time to remind the reader “We are all bound by our circumstances. It’s just that some circumstances come with greater possibilities than others.” (

I liked this book better than the first one in the series. Emmaline’s cousin, Conseulo is being forced into an arranged marriage to the Duke of Marlborough by her mother Alva Vanderbilt. Alva has arranged a summer tea for her friends and a fortune teller, who is murdered on the grounds. Meanwhile Conseulo has vanished. With the help of Derrick, Jesse, and Nanny, Emmie finds Conseulo and clears the poor maid who was arrested for the murder and does get her byline story but it's on page 4. (
