Hard Luck Hank, the protagonist of “Screw the Galaxy, describes himself as “a negotiator and general purpose goon” on the Belvaille, which may not be the most corrupt space station in the universe, but the folks there like to think it would be in the top five. Hank’s job is often to make peace between feuding gangs. He thinks of himself as a bully, but as one woman tells him, he bullies in a nice way. Hank is a mid-range mutant, making him virtually bullet-proof, a real advantage in his line of work. Sadly, it does not keep him from being knocked about enough to land him in the hospital, and he may not have all the job skills he needs to negotiate with an alien fleet. The lightweight humor here is OK, but not much more. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Hank is a thug. He knows he's a thug. He has no problem with that realization. In his view the galaxy has given him a gift: a mutation that allows him to withstand great deals of physical trauma. He puts his abilities to the best use possible and that isn't by being a scientist.Besides, the space station Belvaille doesn't need scientists. It is not, generally, a thinking person's locale. It is the remotest habitation in the entire Colmarian Confederation. There is literally no reason to be there. Unless you are a criminal.Because of its location, Belvaille is populated with nothing but crooks. Every day is a series of power struggles between the crime bosses.Hank is an intrinsic part of this community as a premier gang negotiator. Not because he is eloquent or brilliant or an expert combatant, but because if you shoot him in the face he keeps on talking.Hank believes he has it pretty good until a beautiful and mysterious blue woman enters his life with a compelling job offer.Hank and Belvaille, so long out of public scrutiny, suddenly find themselves at the epicenter of the galaxy with a lot of very unwelcome attention. Hank is a level four (of ten) mutant. His mutation is that he's massive and can't be hurt by gunshot or really much of anything. He lives on a space station in the middle of nowhere, mostly run by gangs. His mutation makes him the perfect guy to mediate conflicts and keep things peaceable, but it also makes him slow and hard on shoes and furniture. Steven Campbell's writing has immediacy and draws you in quickly. A fun hero and a wild universe make for a wonderful ride. Looking forward to more of Hank! ( )
