Whitman's poems delight in the concept of the self, with a heavy dose of appreciation for humankind in general. "Song of Myself" and "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking" are two particularly notable must-reads that combine almost prose-like readability with a deeply poetic understanding of man. ( ) In this tribute to the great American poet, a segmented biography framed by sepia-toned reproductions of period photos and engravings alternates with selections from Whitman's writing. Manipulated photos of leaves and plenty of white space, for example, surround verse from Leaves of Grass , most quite brief, and several prose passages. The selections roughly parallel the biography: "There Was a Child Went Forth," for example, follows the paragraph on his childhood. Other oft-quoted pieces, such as "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer," also appear. But any reader familiar with Whitman will find much omitted. Length may be only one reason. As the author says, Whitman's "frank celebration of sensuality shocked many of his contemporaries," and she does not include any of his more earthy passages, perhaps not wanting to shock her own readers. The book's sophisticated appearance is not matched by its content. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"I celebrate myself, and sing myself, ""And what I assume you shall assume, ""For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. ""--From "Song of Myself"" Celebrate the poetry of one of America's greatest writers. Best known for his anthology "Leaves of Grass," Walt Whitman truly captured the country's spirit as it began to mature; all the issues that concerned this growing democracy--from immigration and race to the plight of working men and women--became the subject of his poems. Among the masterpieces represented here are "There Was a Child Went Forth"; "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking"; "I Sing the Body Electric"; and "A Clear Midnight."
