I visited Kiribati, Nauru and the Marshall Islands way back in 1996/97 and used this, already dated, guidebook. The trip itself was a real eye opener and the guide did its job, with Stanley's easy writing style keeping you reading even when you have no intention to visit where he is describing.
Sadly, with climate change and rising sea levels, some of the attractions listed here are either no longer above water or not that far away. And how long before all that is left of Kiribati are guidebooks like this and memories like mine? ( )

For the tropic stars did flame for us, just as the travel books had promised. The nights were amethyst clear and cool. Eddies of warm air, loaded with earth scents and jungle dreams from islands beyond sight enmeshed us and were gone again. The swing of the old ship was so quiet she seemed to be poised moveless while the stars themselves were rocking to the croon of the bow-wave, back and forth above their mastheads, as we lay tranced while watching.

Although Micronesia has yet to be fully "discovered" by the promoters of packaged consumer tourism, Guam and Saipan already figure alongside such fleshpots of Bali, Thailand and Hawaii in the tourism markets of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.

A weather station and a radio station were built, but Jarvis was evacuated in 1942 and, except for brief scientific visits, has never been inhabited since.
