JUST ONE MORE DANCE, by Carole Howard, is the first research book done on the old time Western square dance fillers in the past 40 years. She has compiled the most famous to the most objectionable in a book not only valuable to the square dance caller, but to any student of Americana. It is a veritable window into our past with mentions of the "dogies, pards, fillies, etc.", rhymed in the always-entertaining cowboy couplet style. "Possum on a fence ... cowboys circlin' on the old cowhide ... big pig rootin' up a little 'tater row ... rattle snakes rattlin' & the coyotes call" ... are but a few of the images recalled. The book is literally a synthesis, menu-style, of the varieties of patter available to the caller. It also shows the couplets that demonstrated their creativity as well as the prejudices & social views of that era. This bit of America & dance culture must not be forgotten, for the art of the cowboy-caller-poet is gone. This book is an appropriate & historically significant addition to the libraries of folklorists, dance callers, leaders & teachers & Western Americana scholars.
