In The Plain Vanilla Astrologer youll read about a wide variety of astrological techniques in common use by most astrologers, but youll also learn about several older methods found in very few, if any, other current books. Youll view 33 charts as Pat Geisler tells you about them. Her style is informal, while still very informative, and sometimes sparks a chuckle-such that the reader can easily imagine how it could feel to be a student in a class Pat is teaching-and enjoying it very much, while also gaining a wealth of useful information. This is not a book for new beginners. It assumes that the reader knows at least the introductory basics of astrology. It covers a wealth of astrological techniques in a way that illuminates them.… (altro)

As far as I can tell, this book is a brain-dump from an astrologer/teacher with decades of experience. It doesn't cover every astrological topic in existence, but not from lack of trying. The book ranges from expected subjects like the planets and the houses to rarer topics like the 29th degree, fixed stars, chronocrators, and decumbitures. Geisler writes in a conversational tone, so reading this book feels almost like sitting with her and just listening to her talk about astrology. There are plenty of digressions and anecdotes. As a knitter myself, I was delighted to learn that not only does the author knit, but several times in the book, she talks about what I'm dubbing the "astrology of knitting." (And I will be putting her suggestions into practice!)

The down side? It's a brain-dump from an astrologer/teacher with decades of experience, and it's not all that organized. Geisler's chapter titles are detailed, which helps a lot, but there's no index. I'm going to have to bookmark those knitting tips—if I ever find any of them again—because they weren't in a chapter of their own, but scattered through the text. The book is in desperate need of stronger editing. Some points were repeated; one, nearly word-for-word within the space of two pages. I recommend this book for all the wonderful information within it, but read it armed with bookmarks, sticky notes, and maybe a pen and paper to take notes with. ( )
