All Christian disciples have one thing in common: as they carry the gospel across the ocean and across the street, persecution will become the norm for those who choose to follow Jesus. How believers respond in the face of persecution reveals everything about their level of faith and obedience. The Insanity of Obedience is a bold challenge to global discipleship. Nik Ripken exposes the danger of safe Christianity and calls readers to something greater. The Insanity of Obedience challenges Christians in the same, provocative way that Jesus did. This book dares you-and prepares you-to cross the street and the oceans with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some of Jesus' instructions sound uncomfortable and are potentially dangerous. We may be initially encouraged by His declaration, "I am sending you out." But how are we to respond when He then tells us that He is sending us out "like sheep among wolves"?In light of the words of Jesus, how can modern day believers rest comfortably in the status quo? How can we embrace casual faith in light of the radical commands of Jesus which are anything but casual? Ripken brings decades of ministry experience in some of the most persecuted areas of the world to bear on our understanding of faith in Jesus. The Insanity of Obedience is a call to roll up your sleeves . . . and to follow and partner with Jesus in the toughest places on this planet."We have the high privilege of answering Jesus' call to go," Ripken says. "But let us be clear about this: we go on His terms, not ours. If we go at all, we go as sheep among wolves." Jesus gives us Himself. And He gives us the tools necessary for those who dare to journey with Him.… (altro)

Ripkin speaks powerful spiritual truths in this book. I listened to The Insanity of God late last year and was refreshed by the power of God in the world. Applying some of the principles he experienced and learned about was harder.
The Insanity of Obedience isn't really a sequel or a companion, even...it's parallel. IoG spoke to the personal stories of believers as they shared with Nik on his tours. IoO speaks to churches and, more importantly, the individual, as they wrestle with working for the Kingdom of Jesus. The examples he uses are in both books, with IoO focusing more on application of the work of the Spirit.
This challenged me, especially because I've grown up in the western church. The forward asks, "How much will this change the American church if we really take it to heart?" (my paraphrase). The guiding principles and truths based on the Bible and experiences of believers worldwide is pushing me to reconsider what being a "member of the church" really looks like. ( )

The book is dedicated to Ruth alongside three unique and special sons. I love you deeply. For decades Somali believers have been beaten, kicked from their homes, hounded out of their country, killed for their faith in Jesus, with their killers going to the extreme of hiding their bodies. Brother and sisters, we honor you through this book. Thank you for what you have taught us and the faith which you have modeled. They can kill you and hide your bodies; but nothing nor anyone can cause us to forget how you walked with Jesus. We remember. We will not waste your sacrifice. We will sing your songs, tell your testimonies, and continue to share Jesus with those for whom you also gave your lives.

[Forward] Warning: this is a difficult book.
[Prologue] Recently, we led a training meeting with some believers in China.
At the risk of sounding a bit "preachy." allow me a moment to restate the obvious--for what we have heard the most often might well be the very command we ignore the most.
[Afterword] Fifteen years ago, we sensed an invitation from God to sit at the feet of believers in persecution around the world, learning from them.
