The rhyming was sometimes awkward, but the multimedia artwork was lovely. ( )

I would use this book as an introduction to poetry in a first or second grade classroom. The text has a lot of descriptive words and is easy to comprehend. The poem is told like it is a story: it has a beginning, middle, and end event. I would use this text as a group read so that students would hear the rhyming and rhythm throughout the text. I would explain that most poems are written in stanzas, but this text is unique because it is told through dialogue.

I like this book for a 3rd-5th grade classroom as a read aloud. If I did this with a 3rd grade class I would have the students focus on the illustration and how the pictures are made of different materials. While reading I would stop and ask if they noticed anything different about the pictures especially on the pages about New York where the buildings are made up of paper with things that have to do with NYC. There are maps, famous people, advertisements, etc and would discuss how these things all describe the setting and give the reader more information on where the snowflakes are. I would then give the students old magazines and maps and have them cut out things that represented themselves and make a picture. I would then have them write a short paragraph about their picture and why they used the different materials they did. If I used this in a 4th grade class I would focus on the characteristics of poetry. As a class I would have them point out things they noticed that were different in this book of poetry compared to a book of prose. After I got some ideas I would use chart paper and create a venn diagram where we would record the similarities and differences of prose and poetry. Then I could hang that in the room as an anchor chart that students could use as a resource when reading or talking about poetry and prose.

I would use this book in 1st and 2nd grade as a read aloud to teach about rhyming words and poetry. I would use it in 1st and 2nd grade because students find snow and Christmas interesting.

I would use this book as an interactive read aloud for second grade because it is too long for younger grades but it still has a lot of illustration. I would use it as an interactive read aloud because it would be easier to point out the rhyme in it than having the students read it on their own or with a group.
