The present fine edition is the outcome of a 2-year research on the work of 88selected artisans, (51 women) from 8 regions of the state of Oaxaca: Glen, Coast, Mixteca,South Mountains, North Mountains, Central Valleys, Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Papaloapan.The curatorship included the analysis of the results of the regional and national folkartcompetitions, as well as the pieces that Banamex has bought since 1998 making a selection basedon 3 criterions: materials, technique and beauty of the pieces presented. This collection of highlyaesthetic pieces that in most cases are still manufactured using Pre-Hispanic techniques aredescribed by Cándida Fernández de Calderón, the director of FomentoCultural Banamex in her introductory text: "What was evident upon doing the investigation isthe richness of the creations made of clay, wood and textile that turns out to be surprising, rich,diverse and of extraordinary quality. We noted also that the group of knitting and weavingwomen have found that the workshops of development and training lead by Remigio Mestas,have been a source of technical improvement that is to be emphasized (Our translation)"--P. 19.Includes a booklet with a directory of the participating artisans.
