A superbly written novel offering an intriguing interpretation of one of the world's greatest aviators, the glamorous and mysterious Jean Batten. Jean Batten became an international icon in the 1930s. A brave, beautiful woman, she made a number of heroic solo flights across the world. The newspapers couldn't get enough of her; and yet she suddenly slipped out of view, disappearing to the Caribbean with her mother and dying in obscurity in Majorca, buried in a pauper's grave. Fiona Kidman's enthralling novel delves into the life of this enigmatic woman, probing mysteries and crafting a fascinating exploration of early flying, of mothers and daughters, and of fame and secrecy.… (altro)

Une biographie romancée d'une écriture simple et limpide. Comme toujours chez Fiona Kidman. ( )

New Zealand aviatrix Jean Batten made the first solo flight from England to New Zealand in 1936 - and became an international celebrity. This brave and extraordinary woman was the product of a dysfunctional family and after her parents separated her life with her mother, a thwarted actress, was often lived in poverty. She suffered several losses in her life, one being an Australian pilot killed in a commercial plane crash in 1937. Batten suffered from bouts of melancholy and after he mother died moved to Majorca, where she died of a septic dog bite and was buried in a pauper's grave. This is a great re-imagining of Batten's life. ( )

A thrilling engrossing novel based on the true exploits of Antipodean aviator Jean Batten during the 1930's.
I was given a digital copy of this novel by the publisher Gallic Books via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review. ( )

I could hear this author's voice as I read the opening pages of this book and I was quickly drawn in to a fascinating account of the life of Jean Batten, aviator. Her name I was familiar with but aside from being aware of her flight across the Tasman Sea, I knew little else . This book goes along way to remedying my ignorance. What a talented lady. This would probably be my favourite book by this author. Kidman evokes the joys and heartache of this courageous young woman in eloquent prose. This is an excellent tale, beautifully rendered and one which I highly recommend. ( )
