I thought this book was a great example of contemporary fiction, because of the time period this book took place in and the current issues it covers. The story follows a boy who has two brothers. They are always copying him and following him around, so one day he finds a way to escape and takes it. Through a series of pretend adventures and some discoveries of his own, he finds the value of his brothers. A great story to read with kids who might be experiencing the same feelings at home. George must escape his pesky little brothers. Calvin-like, he adapts a cardboard box and away he goes, visiting foreign lands (a la Max in Where the Wild Things Are). But as interesting as the places he goes are, there's no one there to play with...so George returns home to his brothers.

Very cool textured illustrations (painted cardboard) with great use of color and respect for white space. ( )
