This issue of The Griffin, the newsletter of The Readers' Subscription Service, perhaps the most intellectual and erudite of all book-of-the-month type organizations, includes on pp. 4-11 an 8-page review by the English Poet W.H. Auden of M.F.K. Fisher's omnibus The Art of Eating which was the June, 1958 "selection" of the Club. Interestingly, there is a typo on the first page of the newsletter which incorrectly indicates Fisher's initials as "M.S.K" instead of "M.F.K." Auden incorporated portions of his review into the introduction he wrote for the UK Edition of The Art of Eating, which was published by Faber and Faber in 1963. However, The Griffin review does not include his famous quote from the intro wherein he stated "I do not know of anyone in the United States today who writes better prose." A history of The Reader's Subscription Service, entitled A Company of Readers, was published in 2001, and the dust jacket blurb for the book describes it as follows: "In 1951, Jacques Barzun, W. H. Auden, and Lionel Trilling joined together to form the editorial board of the Readers' Subscription Book Club. Thus began a venture unique in the annals of American culture. Never before or since have three such eminent intellectuals collaborated to bring books to the attention of the general public."
