Oli finds himself waiting to be a big boy who does not need naps and can play outside whenever. He sneaks outside and makes a wish with a bird and goes on this crazy adventure as a very big boy! After his adventure he realizes that he wants to be small again. He then wakes up in his mama's arms with his family standing around. This book does a great job at showing how easy it is to want to move fast in life but that it is also important to enjoy where you are in life. ( )

Inspired by African folklore, this story is a young boy, Oli, who is granted special powers from a magical bird. He wishes to be big and strong, and then sets out on his adventures. A common theme is African tales is that of strength and vulnerability, and the author emphasizes them in Big Boy as well. The setting is modern day Tanzania, and this book offers a glimpse of life there, even using a few common Kiswhahili words. E.B Lewis's illustrations are the perfect complement for the author's classic tale. ( )

I enjoyed reading this book because it is very iteresting to read. It is about a boy who cannot wait to grow up so that he can have the opportunity to do more things like his brother. I feel like this is an issue that many children face because they often feel like they'e being belittled by older people. This child sneaks out of the house and climbs a tree.He then falls off oft the tree and dreams of being big. In the dream he is taller than building and mountains however he gets very tired and wants to become a young child again. I think this book would be perfect for young children who feel this way as well. I remember feeling this way as a child because my parents were very over protective and I can understand the issue that he faced. ( )

This was a fantastic realistic fiction that many children can relate to. This is a story about a young boy who wants nothing more than to be big like his brother. He ends up dreaming about being big but realizes it isn't what he thought. I think many kids dream about being big and I would use this book as a writing prompt for my students to write about what they want to be when they grow up or what they think it might be like to be big. Big Boy is about a young boy who makes a wish with a magical bird to become a big boy, and the bird grants his wish but he becomes bigger than everyone around him. Through the story the boy learns to accept being small, and begins to even enjoy it. E.B. Lewis illustrates this sort of fairy-tale story in a way that students can truly see the differences in height that are being implied by the author. This can be used to teach a student to be happy in their own skin. ( )
