 Ce roman aux accents faussement légers jette sur le monde d'aujourd'hui un regard tout sauf complaisant. Qu'on soit né à Grand-Mère en Mauricie et qu'on rêve de découvrir Bird-in-Hand, en Pennsylvanie, comme Tess et Jude, les deux protagonistes de Document 1, n'est qu'accessoire. Un prétexte, si vous voulez. L'important, c'est la qualité de la langue, son ironie, sa dérision, son humour, sa maîtrise également, qu'on savoure au fil des chapitres.  Si François Blais réécrit presque chaque fois le même livre rempli de traîne-savates dotés d’une culture folle, il élève indéniablement son jeu d’un cran dans ce sixième roman en tendant le crachoir à de joyeux misanthropes forts en gueule avec qui on aimerait aller pérorer au bar du coin et en se moquant de l’incestueux milieu québécois de l’édition. Le gentleman baratineur Marc Fisher, dont Tess consulte les ouvrages de type "Écrire un roman pour les nuls" pour mieux leur désobéir, en prend aussi plein la gueule.
