"Our One Common Country explores the most critical meeting of the Civil War. Given short shrift or overlooked by many historians, the Hampton Roads Conference of 1865 was a crucial turning point in the War between the States. In this well written and highly documented book, James B. Conroy describes in fascinating detail what happened when leaders from both sides came together to try to end the hostilities. The meeting was meant to end the fighting on peaceful terms. It failed, however, and the war dragged on for two more bloody, destructive months. Through meticulous research of both primary and secondary sources, Conroy tells the story of the doomed peace negotiations through the characters who lived it. With a fresh and immediate perspective, Our One Common Country offers a thrilling and eye-opening look into the inability of our nation's leaders to find a peaceful solution. The failure of the Hamptons Roads Conference shaped the course of American history and the future of America's wars to come"--… (altro)

Conroy's "Our One Common Country" had a number of well researched facts about the Civil War (or War Between the States if you prefer), especially about the Hampton Roads Conference of 1865. That little known event (to me) was a failed attempt to negotiate a peace treaty between the Union and Confederate forces several months before the war came to an end. If it had been successful, thousands of men would have been spared, but the affect on the Country and the slavery question might have been much different.
Beyond the Hampton Roads Conference, the book also had an awful lot of less significant facts about a lot of other people, making the book longer, but not that much more memorable. Most Civil War era books describe all the key battles and military engagements, or details of Lincoln or the Generals, but this book looks at it from a different perspective. The book contains an almost encyclopedic listing of every political and military figure, on both the Union and the Confederate sides of the Civil War. It became something akin to an alphabetical listing of a Who's Who from the Civil War era. Conroy covers the various members of Congress, the cabinet members, the executive members, and some of the significant and less significant military men in the Union and the Confederate States, and any role they had in supporting or opposing a negotiated peace settlement. In summary, I found there were some interesting parts and people, but it didn't really grab me and make me want to continue reading all night. ( )

I Received this book through Goodreads first reads.

The book is about the Hampton Roads Peace conference. The only book thus far written solely on the subject. It is well researched and documented. Does seem a bit long for the subject, however the book is full of facts worth reading about. I suggest the book for anyone who is unterested in the Civil War. ( )
