Sherman tackles the possibly sticky subject of his own aunt's murder, and does so with aplomb. ( ) Casey Sherman has written with passion and a determined spirit regarding his Aunt Mary Sullivan's murder, purportedly by the Boston Strangler in 1964. I read this book because as a young girl of 10 when this event occurred, I still remember the horror of these crimes. I grew up in Massachusetts and my favorite great-aunt lived in Boston and I worried about her vulnerability, being relieved when De Salvo was "caught." Sherman has convinced me that De Salvo was not a murderer and that there were more than one person who perpetrated these crimes. I was disappointed that the book did not pursue, in greater depth, the story of all of the murders that were claimed to have been victims of the Boston Strangler. I cannot fault Sherman - he has done an amazing job at enlisting experts and proving that Mary Sullivan was not killed by Albert De Salvo, and what family has the finances and necessary time needed to pursue this mystery? Massachusetts government is notoriously corrupt and always has been. There are few if any large pursuits of government spending projects, and I include criminal cases in this, that have not been found riddled with the worms of graft, corruption and the good old boys time honored method of stonewalling which continues to plague this case. I feel that the book is well worth reading and because I do not have the personal connection to Mary Sullivan as the author - I have given it a less than glorious rating. An analysis of the Boston Strangler case also offers an insider perspective on the murder of final victim Mary Sullivan, as told by her nephew, and discusses how the chief suspect had no physical evidence linking him to the crimes and was killed before he was charged.
