This was okay. Only okay.

Gaiman's writing was cool, and tossing a werewolf into Innsmouth? Genius.

But Nixey's art? Bleh. Too bad P. Craig Russell couldn't have done more than layouts.

And seriously? 150-odd pages so we can get the same story three times? (The finished product, which is the first third, then the Russell scans of his layouts, and the scans of Nixey's original art before the colour)

Okay at best. ( )

I like Neil Gaiman but I thought this story was a bit gory and confusing. ( )

This graphic novel is based on a short story by [[Neil Gaiman]].

Lawrence is an adjustor in Innsmouth, Massachusetts, a small town with lots of evil magical creatures.

Lawrence himself is a werewolf.

He’s caught in a plot to let loose a kraken and bring about the end of the world – unfortunately it takes sacrificing a werewolf to accomplish.

Very short, quick read. Rather bloody. Apparently there are nods to Lovecraft and Cthulhu although I’m not fan enough to see them.

3 stars. ( )

Lovecraftian horror - which has never appealed to me - drawn in Troy Nixey's patented grotesque art style - which has never appealed to me. It speaks to the power of Neil Gaiman's name that I ever checked this out of the library in the first place.

And I'm glad I didn't buy this, because I think I'd be pretty pissed to pay money for a book that is one-third a disappointing colored short story adaptation and two-thirds the same story printed again as black-and-white thumbnail and finished ink pages. That's an amazing excess of filler. ( )

Lawrence Talbot is an adjustor in Innsmouth, an ancient and mysterious seaport in Massachusetts. When he is informed that the end of the world is fast approaching and will be triggered by a werewolf, Lawrence has reason to worry since he is, himself, a werewolf.

Only the End of the World Again is a graphic novel based on the short story by Neil Gaiman by the same name. It ‘s a rerelease of the original graphic novel with the added bonus of the development of the artwork. To be honest, I had mixed feelings about that artwork. The backgrounds and the wolf are beautifully depicted in great detail while there is a kind of distorted lumpiness to the people – I suspect that was deliberate but I’m not sure it worked all that well. But overall, I really enjoyed the tale. It brings together the works of both H.P. Lovecraft and Roger Zelazny and with a definite nod to the Universal Studios’ Wolfman series of the 1940s.

Thanks to Edelweiss and Dark Horse for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review ( )
