Rucka takes our world and just gives it a push into the future. Biotech has advanced in startling ways. The wealth gap has expanded to such a degree that society has re-adopted the feudal system of the middle ages. The story that results is entertaining and unsettling. He's doing what science fiction does best: telling a cautionary tale that's entertaining rather than preachy. ( ) I really liked the art in this. The story? You know the drill: post-apocalyptic dystopia run by strong men, and our heroine, Robocop, er, I mean, Forever Carlyle, is one of them, but not really, but she doesn't know that yet, even though she's a grown ass woman whose 'family' doesn't even bother to use her name most of the time and spends their time shouting at each other about how she's not one of them. Man, there sure is gonna be some ass kicked when she finds out, eh? (I'm just saying that this would have been 1,000% better if our heroine had been a truly awful person instead of a doe-eyed warrior who just does bad things because she hasn't figured out that daddy is playing her yet.) I'll probably pass on any more. I really, really liked the artwork though. Well, this was possibly the most frustrating tease of a first volume of a series ever. Clearly we're in a post-apocalyptic reality with warring families who use artificially created "children" to fight their battles, but we barely get a taste for the characters, major plot, or background before the collection is over. Normally first storyarcs are 8 to 12 issues long, so that readers can get an idea of whether they want to commit to a longer series or not (the same goes for publishers), but this super-short collection barely gives us that. I'll have to read the next graphic novel to see if the characters are worth their weight in future-tech, but I'm not really holding out any hope that it'll be anything but a future-mafia type story with some Biblical themes thrown in for zest. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
