The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe is a 2015 Lone Star book, which means middle school students should enjoy reading it. However, I feel this book veers younger than that, especially with the book opening with the boys playing a rather juvenile game. The action, such as it were, is extremely slow-moving. Not impressed. Gabe has moved to his grandmothers house where he meets a lot of good friends. Gabe's best friends name is Seth. Seth and Gabe make up a game where the are soldiers having to save children from the kid eating monster. at the end of the summer Gabe starts to lose interest in the Game. after that things get a little weird. Gabe thinks he sees weird shadows in the woods. even Seth is acting a little weird. at the end the things start to clear up after the dead bodies of two gentlemen are buried. Gabe and Seth think the boys had to do with the shadows.
I give this book a three and a half star rate. It was a great book. it did have some confusing parts though. I think any kid who loves horror and mystery should read this book. in fact I think they should read all of Dan Pablockis books. his books are full of mystery that will keep you on your toes. ( )

When Gabe's family relocates after a fire, he finds himself befriended by another 8th grade boy who likes playing fantasy role-playing games in the woods. The popular group of kids who try to befriend Gabe think that Seth is wierd, but when strange things start happening to Gabe, they all are pulled into it. Does the fantasy Hunter who eats babies really exist? For students in grades 6-9 looking for a creepy read, this fits the bill. ( )

This is a novel of suspense, a "scary" novel.

Gabe has moved into his Grandmother's house with his family after their home burned. He meets the boy from down the hill, Seth, and they plan a game in the woods where they are robber princes fighting off the evil Hunter. When school begins Gabe begins to make other friends and the game is stopped. Seth has no other friends and is a little angry at feeling abandoned by Gabe and tells Gabe the Hunter wants them. Meanwhile strange things begin to happen. Could the Hunter be real?

I do not like "scary" books; it's not a genre I would ever read. To me, this story is like the stories you tell late at night in the dark around a campfire or a sleepover when you want to scare everyone and no one sleeps. Of course, because it's a novel, it's much longer. You could easily shorten it and scare some people. I'm not sure I understood the end either. I'm sure those of you who like the "scary" books and weird nighttime stories will like this as well. ( )

The two Robber Princes followed the trail of blood deeper into the thicket. Ahead, in the shadow of towering trees, the child's cries grew faint. A pale violet mist seeped from the damp earth as the late hour secreted daylight away.
