Ugh. Didn't finish. ( )

Ok book. Didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. At only 278 pgs you can easily get through this in a day ( )

I am stuck between a 2.5 and 3 on this one and just not moved enough to go the extra star. It was ok- there was a section in the middle where I thought I was on an acid trip (just kidding) because I had no idea what was going on- the author is fond of veiled tangents of which I am not. The remainder was pretty straight forward and an adequate, if formulaic, tale of the possible consequences when fate and circumstance misalign. ( )

I had to reread parts of this book several times because I could not make sense of what was going on. The characters are flimsy at best. There was not a psychological thriller or a crime novel - it was more of a junior college level theology debate. I expected a whole lot more from this book. ( )

I have read a couple of Robert Stone novels previously and decided to read this because I thought it would have an interesting plot. Although the book moved along, I found overall it was hard to truly say it was a great book. The were too many characters that had way too much baggage for one novel. By the title , you knew what was going to happen and the final resolution of the plot was just so-so. I still need to read Dog Soldiers by Stone that won a national book award and of course I would try more his books in the future. If you like books that deal with professor/student affairs, Catholic/abortion and alcoholism, then try this book. It was quick read and basically ok. I do know that are lot of better books out there for those with limited time. ( )

What “Black-Haired Girl” does have in common with the rest of Mr. Stone’s work is a fascination with the existential and religious yearnings of the human heart, and with what Melville called Hawthorne’s fascination with the “great power of blackness” rooted in man’s capacity for sin.
