If you like twisty, time-travel, enigmatic books, you'll like it too. ( ) audio fiction (meta drama with time travel: 1964, 1985, 2013 Mississippi). Maybe I would be less confused if I'd read this in print, because it was sometimes tricky to remember if I was listening to the main story, or the story inside the book inside the book (also called Long Division). But I bet I would still be confused. The narration was, apart from that, really excellent and the characters were interesting. I liked how much this book tackled and its very satirical bent. I can have a hard time with time travel, though, and I think that's what tripped me up about this...between that and the book element, this might have been more effective to me if I had read it instead of listening to it. Worth a revisit, but I'm glad I read it. Yet another book that should have been nominated for an Alex. ******** Read Harder: book about books (well A book in this case) Who doesn't love a good fusion of Southern Literature, magical realism and time travel? Hooked from page one by the characters and held rapt with the plot twists. Best book I've read so far this year. Review. I think this is the first time I've liked a book and quit on it anyway about a third of the way through - twice. It has a nice, light satirical touch - not as frenetic as The Sellout, but just as effective. I liked that the characters are all in their early teens, so even when they're snarky there's still childlike sweetness about them. And if the publishers description of the book as "Twain-esque" means that City Coldson is a kind of black, hip-hop Tom Sawyer, I can see that. I think I quit (twice) because the plot just didn't have enough juice to keep me going. On paper the story sounds entertaining - time travel, a mysterious disappearance, and a strange book that ties it all together - but at the one third mark, I felt like the book had given me all it had to give. I think this book would make a fantastic graphic novel though. Maybe that was my problem - it read like a graphic novel, but without the pictures. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Kiese Laymon's debut novel is a Twain-esque exploration of celebrity, authorship, violence, religion, and coming of age in Post-Katrina Mississippi, written in a voice that's alternately funny, lacerating, and wise. The book contains two interwoven stories. In the first, it's 2013: after an on-stage meltdown during a nationally televised quiz contest, 14-year-old Citoyen "City" Coldson becomes an overnight YouTube celebrity. The next day, he's sent to stay with his grandmother in the small coastal community of Melahatchie, where a young girl named Baize Shephard has recently disappeared. Before leaving, City is given a strange book without an author called "Long Division." He learns that one of the book's main characters is also named City Coldson, but "Long Division" is set in 1985. This 1985 City, along with his friend and love-object, Shalaya Crump, discovers a way to travel into the future, and steals a laptop and cellphone from an orphaned teenage rapper called...Baize Shephard. They ultimately take these with them all the way back to 1964, to help another time-traveler they meet protect his family from the Klan. City's two stories ultimately converge in the mysterious work shed behind his grandmother's, where he discovers the key to Baize's disappearance. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
