My preschoolers enjoyed it when I read it to them. It was a little different from their own school but it allowed us to talk about what it would be like in the "big school" when they went to Kindergarten.I really enjoyed the book “Ready and Waiting for You” by Judi Moreillon. The first thing that caught my attention about the book was the fantastic illustrations. They fill up the entire page on every page, and use extremely vibrant colors and a collage style. The pictures are extremely appealing and engaging as they depict the child’s journey throughout the school building. In addition, the pages of the book fold out to double their size as the main character goes through each door. This makes the book very interactive and fun to navigate. Lastly, the book repeats the line “We’re ready and waiting for you” on each page. This would be a good book to use for cooperative reading because the students could participate and read that line as a class each time it comes up. The main idea of the book is to familiarize students with all of the different people that they may run into at school including custodians, cafeteria workers, teachers, principals, librarians, and classmates. I enjoyed this book. One reason I liked this book was because of the rhyming and repetition. Such as the repletion of the line, “come in, come in. Come through this door. Are you new?” I also liked the rhyming, such as when the author writes, “your proud principal and the school mascot say, ‘we’re ready and waiting for you.’” I also liked how the book had fold out pages that continued the illustrations to go along with the actions on the page. Such as when the book says come in and the page folds out and the new student is actually in the school. The main message of this story was to show that being in a new situation is not bad, but can be welcoming and an exciting new experience.
On the first day of school, the members of the school community are ready to welcome new students. Everything about Ready and Waiting for You presents a message of comfort and hospitality. Catherine Stock’s warm and colorful illustrations with fold-out pages (open-door design) will draw young readers to touch and get close to the pages. The illustrations were done in torn paper, and the effect is kid-friendly and relaxed. The short, repetitive text works well for one-on-one reading and small groups. Parents should choose this book for the week leading up to the start of school to set their children at ease. Teachers and school librarians should select this book for the first morning of school to welcome their own students. Perhaps they can try to remember the names of all of the people who welcomed them that day or draw pictures of their own experience on the first day. There are many books about the first day of school, but this one stands out for its appearance, sense of comfort, and atmosphere of hospitality. Elenchi di rilievo
